What is the Mitchell Scholarship?

The Mitchell Scholarship was named to honor US Senator George Mitchell’s contributions to the peace process in Northern Ireland. It helps form connections between future leaders of America and the island and people of Ireland.

The scholarship offers up to 12 scholars funding for a year of postgraduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. It pays for tuition and accommodation and offers a stipend that recipients can use to pay for living expenses and travel during the academic year.

Eligibility requirements

Before you apply for the Mitchell Scholarship, make sure you meet these requirements.

  • Be a US citizen

  • Be between the age of 18 and 30 on the due date of the application

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

  • Married applicants are permitted to apply but won’t receive additional funding to cover their spouse’s expenses or assistance with their spouse’s travel documents

The Mitchell Scholarship accepts applications through its website. Here’s how it works.

In addition to the application, applicants will also need to sit for a video interview. The essay and interview are your opportunities to let your personality show through and show the selection committee why you deserve the award.

  • Applications close: 5 PM on September 30th

  • Video interview deadline: 5 PM on October 3rd

  • Semi-finalist virtual interviews: October 31st - November 2nd

  • Finalist interviews: November 19th

  • Recipients announced: November 19th
