Why do I need to give my Social Security Number?

Your Social Security Number is used to verify your identity and your eligibility to receive certain kinds of financial aid.  For federal student aid like the Pell Grant, the government will check to see that the name submitted on your financial aid application matches the exact spelling of your name that is on file with the Social Security Administration.  So be sure to dot all your eyes and cross all your tees (and don't, you know, forget a middle name!) or it can result in delays to your application.
